Our history

Wærholmen has long and proud roots as a trading post on the Sognefjord. From the mid-18th century, this was a lively hub for trade and maritime traffic in outer Sogn. The first person to trade here was Gregorius Leisner in 1758. At its peak, Wærholmen had both a tavern, an inn and a ferry station, and from 1858 the town was one of the stops for the County Boats.

Throughout the 19th century, various merchants from Bergen and the district kept the trade alive, and from 1883 to 1898 it was Christian Hansen from Vadheim who ran the place. He was the son of the well-known merchant and hotelier Sjur Hansen Vadem.

When the stopping place was moved to Lavik at the beginning of the 20th century, trade declined, and in 1951 the main building burned down. Today we have breathed life into the place again. We have restored the boathouse where Laila's father, Agnar, built boats for several decades – and converted the old boat loft into a cozy vacation home.
